I am very pleased to have been selected, once again, to showcase my designs in Kansas City Fashion Week's Spring 2014 showcase.
KCFW hosts three model casting days, which all potential models must attend. Models are measured, photographed, and demonstrate their runway walk. A panel of KCFW staff then rate each model to determine whether they make it on the roster. After the roster is published, designers have the daunting task of going through it and making their selections. Over 300 models auditioned, more than 200 made the roster, and each designer has to narrow these beautiful, talented men and women down to 8-20 for their final selections. And, let me tell you, this is no easy task!!
Designers are allowed to attend the model castings so that they may see the models walk, which is an important factor. But during the three castings, a total of five designers were present. Which makes me wonder how the others go about choosing their models.
My references change from collection to collection.
Sometimes there is a certain "look" I want my models to have, which has ranged from red-heads to tanned skin.
I typically go for models all about the same measurements, though I am starting to branch out.
I have chosen models who have had the boldness to come to me, introduce themselves and express interest in my collections and what I am doing. (NOT just yo, do you need any models?)
Sometimes I choose models that I have worked with in the past, which I know to be quality and am able to trust them to represent me and my collections image as I have it in my head.
Sometimes, though less often, I decide not to use specific models because of how they have behaved in the past.
But this doesn't mean I won't select these girls for a show down the road. My wants and needs are constantly changing!
Mostly what I want models to know is this: Don't be discouraged if you don't get selected this go-round. Things are always changing, and I love seeing new faces! Attend as many castings as you are able, it only gives more experience and gets your face out in the Fashion industry.
Take that step. And be bold about it. Make us designers notice you, but in a good way!
